Bengal Firecracker Factory Blast: Death Count Rises to 9

National Desk, 17 May: As many as nine people were dead and several others have been injured in the enormous explosion that took place at a firecrackers plant in West Bengal, according to reports that surfaced on Wednesday. On instructions from the state government, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has started an investigation into the event.

Notably, a massive explosion occurred at a fire crackers factory in the West Medinipur area. According to reports, the explosion caused the entire building where the fireworks factory was housed to collapse. Following the explosion, emergency rescue efforts were launched.

Police officers predicted that once the rescue efforts are complete, more bodies would likely be found. Meanwhile, those injured in the incident were taken to a nearby hospital where they are claimed to be in critical condition.

The police were investigating the situation and attempting to find what caused the explosion. Officials suspected that the plant was used to create crude bombs, some of which may have burst and burned the fireworks. According to officials, it is most likely that the unrefined bombs are to blame for the explosion.

Meanwhile, it later came to light that the fireworks factory was operating illegally without the required permits and oversight from the local authority including the police.

According to the residents, the authorities disregarded repeated requests for action against the unlawful factory that has expanded to employ numerous locals.
