Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to Make History at Republic Day Celebrations in Dibrugarh
Guwahati: For the first time in Assam’s history, a sitting Chief Minister will participate in Republic Day celebrations in Dibrugarh, marking a significant milestone for the state.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will lead the celebrations in the town, which has undergone a remarkable transformation from being a militancy-affected area to hosting full-scale Republic Day festivities.
In a message shared on his official X handle, CM Sarma expressed his pride, stating, “Dibrugarh is all set to host the Central Republic Day celebrations for the first time, and the town is all decked up in tricolour to celebrate the spirit of the Republic. From being affected by militancy to now hosting full-scale Republic Day celebrations, it has come a long way.”
Preparations for the historic event are in full swing. Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya will unfurl the national flag at the Republic Day event in Guwahati’s Khanapara, while CM Sarma will take the honour in Dibrugarh.
Last week, CM Sarma reviewed arrangements for the celebrations, directing officials from the General Administration and Police Administration to ensure adequate preparations, particularly in newly created Co-districts. In Kamrup Metropolitan district, celebrations will be limited to the Dimoria Co-district.
The Chief Minister also instructed the Department of Housing and Urban Affairs to initiate statewide cleanliness drives, enlisting the help of Gaon Burhas (village heads) and voluntary organizations to ensure a clean and vibrant environment for the festivities.
In a prelude to the main event, “Road Past” ceremonies will be organized on January 25 in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and district headquarters across the state. The celebrations aim to highlight Assam’s progress and resilience, showcasing its commitment to unity and the values of the Republic.
