Assam CM orders suspension of Single Engine Ferries
Guwahati: Following the Nimatighat ferry capsizes in Jorhat, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has decided to suspend the ferries running on single-engine.
Chief Minister on Thursday visited Nimatighat and took the stock of the incident.
After visiting the location, the Chief Minister announced the suspension of all ferries which run single-engine and announced that the ferries will have to be upgraded with double engines. He also stated that the State Government will provide a Fund of Rs 10 lakh for upgrading these ferries to double engines.
Sarma further stated that the government has discussed the construction work of Majuli Bridge with the Center.
He added that the construction will be started in November this year and will be completed within a period of 4 years.
On the other hand, Assam Transport Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary has suspended three Inland Water Transport (IWT) officials over the incident.
During the incident, one person was confirmed to be dead while at least 84 persons were rescued. Two other persons are still missing and operations to rescue them are still on.
