Assam CM to Inaugurate State-of-the-Art Cancer Hospital in Guwahati

Guwahati, 2nd March: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today will dedicate the most advanced cancer hospital in the Northeast, the State Cancer Institute in Guwahati. Additionally, he will launch welfare initiatives worth Rs 640 crore for Kamrup Metro.

During the inauguration of a cancer care unit at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) on Friday, Chief Minister Sarma announced that Assam’s cancer care model is being emulated by other states in India. This unit is part of the state’s network of 17 hospitals dedicated to cancer care. Sarma emphasized efforts to expand this initiative, aiming to establish Assam as the national hub for cancer care. The SMCH unit falls under category 2, offering comprehensive care to patients, while the state’s only category 1 facility, the apex cancer care hospital, is set to open in Guwahati.

The project, managed by the Assam Cancer Care Foundation, will be financed by the state government (Rs 2,460 crore), Tata Trusts (Rs 1,180 crore), the Central government (Rs 180 crore), and additional contributions (over Rs 80 crore). Sarma assured that any financial shortfalls will be covered by the state government. He also highlighted that 10 cancer care centers are already operational, having served over 2.15 lakh patients.
