Assam CM Urges Residents to Stay Indoors as Guwahati Faces Heavy Rainfall and Waterlogging
Guwahati, 7th August: As Guwahati grapples with a second wave of intense rainfall, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a stern advisory urging residents to remain indoors and limit vehicle use to essential trips only. The Chief Minister has specifically advised against traveling towards the downtown hospital areas on GS Road due to severe waterlogging.
On August 5, heavy rains inundated Assam’s capital, resulting in widespread waterlogging across the city. The deluge caused significant disruptions, leaving commuters, school students, and even emergency vehicles stranded for hours amid severe traffic congestion.
The rainfall led to the accumulation of water on almost all peripheral roads, exacerbating the situation for those returning from work and school. The conditions forced many, including ambulances, to remain stuck until late in the evening.
In response to the flash floods, all educational institutions within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) area have been ordered to close on Tuesday, August 6. This measure, affecting both government and private schools, has been implemented under Section 30.2 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, to ensure public safety.
