Mizoram District Magistrate Imposes Nightly Movement Restrictions Near Bangladesh Border Amidst Unrest

Northeast Desk, 7th August: Cheemala Siva Gopal Reddy, the District Magistrate of Lawngtlai district in Mizoram, has issued a significant order in response to the escalating unrest in neighboring Bangladesh. The directive restricts residents’ movement within 3 kilometers of the Bangladesh and Myanmar borders between 6 pm and 6 am. This measure aims to ensure the safety and security of the local population amidst the ongoing instability.

The order specifically prohibits any movement by individuals, groups, vehicles, or the grazing of animals within the designated 3-kilometer zone during the restricted hours. Violations of this directive will be met with penalties under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023. The restrictions will remain in effect until further notice.

In addition to these measures, Mizoram Police have upgraded security along the 318-kilometer Indo-Bangladesh border. All police stations in the area have been briefed to heighten their vigilance. The state police are working closely with the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Assam Rifles, who are responsible for guarding the Indo-Bangladesh and Indo-Myanmar borders, respectively. As of now, there have been no reports of a refugee influx from Bangladesh into Mizoram.
