Assam: Congress MLA Kamalakhya Purkayastha to Step Down

Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee working president Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha will resign from his position, reports emerged on Monday.

According to reports, North Karimganj MLA made the dicision after hearing that Congress presidents had been named in three Barak Valley districts without a vote.

Reportedly, Legislator Purkayastha is dissatisfied with the sudden made appointments.

The Legislator declared that he will inform All India Congress Committee (AICC) regarding the current situation.

Kamrul Islam Choudhury the general secretary of the APCC had earlier in September 2022 offered his resignation from the party’s primary membership.

In a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Choudhury listed the “directionless and confused leadership of the APCC” as his primary reason for quitting.

Choudhury added that he and other party workers felt discouraged despite senior party leaders publicly acknowledging that Congress MLAs had cast cross-votes in the most recent presidential elections.

He stated that Assam Congress President Bhupen Bora had made reference to cross-voting MLAs as “gaddar” (cowards) and was aware of the situation.

Meanwhile, he continued, “thousands of grass-root workers like me” have contributed “blood and sweat for the party for years.”
