Assam: CRPF Jawan Drowns as Family Vehicle Plunges into River

Guwahati, 2nd Jan: On the inaugural day of 2024 in Assam’s Lakhimpur district, a heartbreaking incident occurred as Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan Simanta Saikia lost his life in a tragic accident.

Saikia, accompanied by his wife and child, was returning from a picnic at Jamugurihat when their vehicle veered off the road, plunging into River Subansiri. Despite the efforts of his family and nearby residents who promptly pulled the vehicle from the river, Saikia tragically drowned inside.

In a separate incident on the same day, a 33-year-old man, Bidyut Deka, lost his life in a hit-and-run accident on National Highway no 15 at Sipajhar under Darrang district.

Deka was found dead on the highway with his motorcycle nearby, indicating a hit-and-run case.

The authorities identified Deka as the victim, and another individual, suspected to be the pillion rider, was rushed to Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) in critical condition for urgent medical care.

The incidents cast a somber shadow on the beginning of the new year in Assam.
