Assam: Detainee’s Death at Khelmati Police Station Sparks Outrage in Lakhimpur
Guwahati, 23rd May: The death of a detainee at Khelmati Police Station in Assam’s Lakhimpur district on May 23 has ignited widespread outrage among local residents. The deceased, identified as 42-year-old Arsabh Ali, was a resident of the South Chandmari locality in Lakhimpur.
Sources report that Ali was taken into custody by Khelmati police in connection with a stolen mobile phone, which he had reportedly purchased. Police sources further indicated that Ali was suspected to be the leader of a mobile phone theft gang.
Reports suggest that Ali suddenly fell ill and collapsed within the police station premises, leading to his death. The incident has triggered a strong response from the local community, who are demanding accountability and transparency in the investigation.
In response, Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh issued directives via social media, announcing several immediate actions. “Reference death in police custody at Khelmati OP District North Lakhimpur – 1. IC of Khelmati OP has been placed under suspension along with the night sentry. 2. An independent enquiry has been ordered by Addl SP Biswanath. 3. All mandatory provisions of law & directions of NHRC/AHRC are being followed. 4. DIG NR has been directed to proceed to Khelmati immediately,” DGP Singh stated.
The suspension of the Officer-in-Charge (IC) and the night sentry, along with the order for an independent inquiry, underscores the seriousness of the incident. The directives from the DGP aim to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation, in accordance with the legal and human rights guidelines set by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC).
