Assam DGP Issues Apology Over Unwarranted Detention of Forest Officer Tarun Gogoi by Golaghat Police

Guwahati, 22nd December: The Director General of Police in Assam issued a formal apology on December 22, 2023, for the unwarranted detention of Tarun Gogoi, a forest officer, by Golaghat Police.

The incident gained attention as it highlighted the sensitive matter of the forest officer’s detention after he couldn’t provide an elephant safari pass to the SP’s family.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and DGP GP Singh immediately addressed the situation.

DGP Singh expressed regret on his X handle, emphasizing courteous behavior and extending apologies to CM Sarma and the people of Assam.

DGP GP Singh on his X handle wrote, “I’ve been made aware of the last evening’s undue detention of Sri Tarun Gogoi of @assamforest by Golaghat Police. I have spoken with Sri Gogoi and conveyed my regret as @DGPAssamPolice SP Golaghat has also been suitably advised. Our aim remains courteous behaviour with fellow citizens. I have also conveyed my sincere apologies to the Hon CM Assam for anguish caused to him and the Government. Apologies to people of Assam with a commitment to improve further.”

Meanwhile, Assam CM also wrote, “I spoke to the Director General of Police, Assam Sri @gpsinghips regarding the incident involving the Superintendent of Police, Golaghat. We do not endorse arrogance, and it is important for public servants to remain humble in their thoughts and actions.”

CM Sarma reinforced the importance of humility for public servants, clarifying that arrogance would not be endorsed.

The incident underscores the commitment to improving interactions between citizens and law enforcement in Assam.
