Assam: Elephant-Human Conflict Escalates in Goalpara District

Guwahati, 4th May: In an alarming escalation of the ongoing elephant-human conflict, wild elephants invaded two family homes in the Upartala-Bijoypur village of Dudhnoi, Goalpara district. The incident, occurring on the night of May 4, saw the elephants wreak havoc by consuming paddy and rice stored in the homes.

The affected families, preparing for their participation in the third phase of elections on May 7, now face a daunting challenge, as their homes and livelihoods have been disrupted by the marauding elephants. Additionally, the residence of Bipul Boro in Karipara near Dudhnoi fell victim to destruction by the elephant herd.

Tragically, this incident follows a recent deadly encounter in Assam’s Sonitpur district, where three individuals, including two forest guards, lost their lives in an elephant attack. The wild elephant, straying into Dhirai Majuli village from the nearby Dhekiajuli forest, fatally trampled the victims during a forest patrol.

The deceased, identified as forest guards Koleswar Boro and Biren Rava, along with local resident Jatin Tanti, succumbed to the elephant’s rampage, while another forest department employee, Dibakar Malakar, sustained critical injuries and has been hospitalized.

These distressing events underscore the urgent need for comprehensive measures to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts and safeguard both human lives and the natural habitat of wild animals.
