Assam Expands Tiwa Autonomous Council to Include 113 More Villages

Guwahati, 7th August: The Assam government has officially expanded the Tiwa Autonomous Council to incorporate 113 additional Tiwa-inhabited villages, raising the total number of included villages to 263. The official notification was issued on Tuesday.

The newly included villages are distributed across several districts: 30 in Morigaon, 52 in Nagaon, three in Hojai, and 28 in Dhemaji. This expansion addresses longstanding demands from the Tiwa community, which has sought greater representation and inclusion in the council.

The Tiwa Autonomous Council was established following the Tiwa (Lalung) Agreement signed on April 13, 1995, with Narayan Kumar Radukakoti serving as the Chief Executive Member at its inception.

Council Chief Executive Member Jiban Chandra Konwar expressed his appreciation to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister of State for Plains Tribes and Backward Classes Ranoj Pegu, and Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika for their efforts in meeting the community’s demand. Konwar also urged the state government to address other pending issues, including the request for Sixth Schedule autonomous administration.
