Assam: Ferry Services and Fishing Activities Suspended in Kamrup District Amid Cyclone Remal Threat

Guwahati, 27th May: To address the looming threat posed by Cyclone Remal, authorities in Assam’s Kamrup district have taken decisive action, suspending all ferry services and fishing activities on the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries from May 27 to May 28, 2024. The move comes as part of a proactive strategy by the Kamrup District Disaster Management Authority to mitigate potential risks arising from anticipated strong winds and heavy rainfall associated with the cyclone.

The suspension order, issued by the district authority, mandates the cessation of all departmental and private boats or vessels operating ferry services within the district during the specified period. Additionally, fishing activities in the Brahmaputra and its tributaries have been prohibited to ensure the safety and well-being of the public.

However, certain exceptions have been made to the suspension order to accommodate essential services, relief and rescue operations, as well as boats engaged in transporting construction materials and labor for critical projects such as the Guwahati-North Guwahati Bridge project.

The decision to suspend ferry services and fishing activities comes in light of National Bulletin No. 14 (BOB/01/2024), which highlighted the development of Cyclone Remal over the east-central Bay of Bengal. Meteorological forecasts indicate that as the cyclone progresses northward, it is expected to bring significant weather disturbances to Kamrup district and the wider region of Assam.

This suspension serves as a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding the lives and property of residents in Kamrup district against the potential impacts of the severe weather conditions predicted by meteorological authorities. Authorities urge residents to heed these measures and cooperate with local administration efforts to ensure their safety during this critical period.
