Tripura and Assam Gear Up for Cyclone Remal; High-Level Meeting Held to Review Preparedness

Northeast Desk, 27th May: As the severe cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ made landfall between Bangladesh and the adjoining West Bengal coast, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha reassured residents of the state’s readiness to tackle the cyclone’s impact. In a social media post on Sunday, CM Saha emphasized the expected moderate to heavy rainfall and gale-force winds across various districts of Tripura, urging the populace to exercise utmost caution.

“Dear Tripura residents, you are aware that under the influence of Cyclone ‘Remal’, moderate to heavy rainfall with gale-force winds is expected in various districts of the state. State and district administrations are fully prepared to deal with this calamity. I appeal to the people of the state to exercise utmost caution,” stated Saha.

In anticipation of the cyclone’s landfall, the Tripura government issued a red alert for four districts: South, Dhalai, Khowai, and West, advising residents to take necessary precautions.

Similarly, Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the impending cyclone, warning of potential inclement weather in parts of Assam. “Cyclone Remal can bring severe weather to parts of Assam. We are taking several precautionary measures. NDRF & SDRF teams are on standby, control rooms are operational, and we are deploying a whole-of-government approach to keep our citizens safe. Stay safe and please cooperate with your local administration,” Sarma stated.

In response to the cyclone’s approach, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting on Sunday to review the preparedness for Cyclone Remal. Modi instructed the Union Home Ministry to closely monitor the situation and directed the deployment of additional National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) teams to be ready for immediate action. Currently, 12 NDRF teams are stationed in West Bengal and one in Odisha.

The government’s proactive measures reflect the seriousness of the situation and the commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all affected regions.
