Assam flood: Over 6 lakh people affected in 27 districts
Guwahati: The current spate of floods in Assam has affected more than 6.62 lakh people in 27 districts, according to a report released on Wednesday by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority.
According to the reports, Nagaon district is the hardest hit with 2.88 lakh individuals affected followed by 1.19 lakh in Cachar, 1.07 lakh in Hojai, 60562 in Darrang, 27282 in Biswanath, and 19755 in Udalguri.
“This round of floods hit 1413 villages under 70 revenue circles, and flooding submerged 46160.43 hectares of crops,” the reports claimed.
One individual drowned in the Cachar district, it added.
Reports further stated that the district administrations have set up 135 relief camps and 113 distribution centres to house 48,304 flood victims, including 6,911 children and 50 pregnant women and breastfeeding moms.
Meanwhile, the water level of the Kopili river in Kampur of Nagaon district is still over the danger limit and has reached its maximum point.
On Wednesday, the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, and Fire and Emergency Services teams rescued 8,054 people in flood-stricken districts across the country.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma issued a food relief package for Dima Hasao district which has been severely impacted by fake floods for the past three days following a cabinet meeting yesterday.
While addressing to media, CM Sarma said that a total of 12 metric tonnes of food will be airdropped as a relief gift at Haflong in Dima Hasao tomorrow morning.
He further added that ministers Jogen Mohan and Bimal Bora that they needed to get to Haflong as soon as possible to oversee the process.
“Two cabinet ministers have already begun their travel to flood-affected districts to assess the situation. They’ve been told to get there on a two-wheeler if road connectivity is impeded,” he said.
Furthermore, the chief minister stated that the Barak Valley which has also been severely flooded has enough food, gasoline, and diesel to endure for more than a week.
CM Sarma said that the state ministers Parimal Suklabaidya and Ashok Singhal have been ordered to visit Barak Valley tomorrow to assess the situation.
The chief minister also offered ex-gratia payments of Rs 4 lakh to the families of those who died as a result of the floods that have ravaged the state.
He added that the state administration has also inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Fly big Airlines to transport trapped persons in Barak Valley due to floods and road and railway disruptions.
The fly big airline would provide flight service between Guwahati and Silchar for the next ten days under the terms of the agreement.
The cost of a one-way ticket has been set at Rs 3000 with the state government covering the remainder, he said.
