Assam floods: CM thanks PM Modi, Shah for releasing Rs 324 crores

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his delight at receiving the first instalment of the central share of the state disaster response fund, and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for releasing Rs. 324 crores to assist the state in dealing with the ongoing flood situation.

The chief minister said that the funds will ensure that affected residents receive timely relief and rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, a delegation from the Ministry of Home Affairs arrived in Guwahati on Thursday and met with officials from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) to assess the damage caused by recent floods and landslides in the state.

This year’s floods have affected over 3 lakh people in 247 communities across the state.

According to ASDMA reports, IMCT members would be divided into two groups for visiting the relevant impacted districts in order to expedite an effective damage assessment.

According to the flood report, two individuals died in the flood in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of human lives lost in the first phase of the flood to 30 (25 in Flood and 5 in Landslide), with 5,61,149 people living in 956 villages across 12 districts affected, reported ANI.

A total of 47139.12 hectares of cropland have been affected, and in all affected areas, 295 relief camps and 70 relief distribution centres have been established. These facilities house a total of 66,836 convicts.

Assam’s flood situation remained grave, with over 5.61 lakh people affected by the floods in seven districts.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority’s (ASDMA) daily flood report, one person perished in each of the Nagaon district towns of Kampur and Raha. With this, the total number of individuals killed in the floods and landslides this year has risen to 30.

The flood has affected more than 5,61,100 people in the districts of Cachar, Dima Hasao, Hailakandi, Hojai, Karbi Anglong West, Morigaon, and Nagaon, according to the ASDMA,

Nagaon has been hit the hardest, with over 3.68 lakh people affected, followed by Cachar with nearly 1.5 lakh people and Morigaon with over 41,000.
