Assam: Forest Department Raids Illegal Timber Mills in Bongaigaon, Seizes Contraband Worth Rs 2.50 Lakh

Guwahati, 20th April: The Forest Department in Bongaigaon district executed a decisive raid in Matraghola, targeting illegal timber mills operating clandestinely in the region. This operation underscores ongoing efforts to curb illicit activities in forested areas.

Conducted by the Abhayapuri regional forest department, the raid resulted in the seizure of a significant quantity of wooden poles and timber. These confiscated materials, including processed wood, were estimated to hold a market value of approximately Rs 2.50 lakh, shedding light on the magnitude of unlawful operations in the vicinity.

Officials leading the operation revealed that the illegal timber mills had been operating unchecked for an extended period before being uncovered in the raid. While no arrests were made during the operation, forest authorities affirmed their commitment to conducting a thorough investigation before proceeding with further actions.

Speaking on the matter, a forest official stated, “We have not arrested anyone yet. We will conduct the investigation and then take further action.”

The coordinated effort by forest department officials reflects a concerted attempt to crack down on unauthorized timber processing and trading activities, safeguarding the ecological integrity of the region and preserving its natural resources.
