Assam Government Declares January 5 as Restricted Holiday for Rongker Karkli (Rongker Puja)

Guwahati – The Assam Government has announced January 5 as a restricted holiday for state government employees to honor Rongker Karkli, or Rongker Puja, a traditional festival of the Karbi community.

This decision serves as a respectful acknowledgment of the cultural heritage of the Karbi people, especially in Karbi Anglong district, where Rongker Puja is celebrated with rituals, traditional dances, indigenous games, and cultural performances. The festival embodies prayers for protection, peace, prosperity, and a fruitful harvest.

By declaring this day a restricted holiday, the government aims to support cultural inclusivity and allows the Karbi community to celebrate their traditions officially. This initiative not only enhances the recognition of Assam’s cultural diversity but also encourages the preservation of indigenous practices, fostering unity within the state.
