Assam govt fixes speed limit on various categories of roads; Check details

Guwahati: The Governor of Assam has fixed the maximum speed on various categories of roads and various classes of motor vehicles in the state after considering the opinions and views of various stakeholders regarding the proposal of speed limits vis-à-vis types of roads in the state for various modes of vehicles.

The order comes into effect on June 2, 2022.

As per the government notification, the maximum speed restriction on a four-lane divided road for passenger vehicles (non-transport) with no more than eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat has been set at 100 km/h.

The maximum speed limit for such category vehicles on municipal roads and other roads shall be 60 km/h and 80 km/h, respectively.

Similarly, on the 4-lane split carriageway, the maximum speed restriction for passenger vehicles (transport) with no more than eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat has been set at 80 km/h, 70 km/h on other routes, and 60 km/h on roads within city limits.

The maximum speed limit on 4-lane divided carriageway, other roads, and roads within municipal limits has been set at 80 km per hour, 70 km per hour, and 60 km per hour, respectively, for motor vehicles (both transport and non-transport) used for the carriage of passengers with nine or more seats in addition to the driver’s seat (M2 and M3 category vehicles).

The speed limit for goods-carrying vehicles (N category vehicles) has been set at 70 km/h, 60 km/h, and 40 km/h, respectively, whereas three-wheeled (passenger goods) vehicles must maintain a speed limit of 50 km/h on 4-lane divided carriageways, 50 km/h on other roads, and 40 km/h on roads within municipal limits.

On a four-lane divided carriageway, motorcycle riders must maintain speeds of up to 80 km/h, 60 km/h on other routes, and 50 km/h on roads within city limits.

The notification also stated that, in the interest of public safety, speed limits at specific locations such as accident-prone zones, black spots, areas under construction, areas requiring engineering modifications, market areas, and school areas, among others, shall be reduced, with speed limit signage installed by the concerned road owing agencies across the roads and mandatory for compliance.
