Assam IGP: Intelligence Inputs on ISIS Leaders’ Movement Lead to Arrest
Guwahati, 21st March: Following the apprehension of two high-ranking ISIS leaders in Assam’s Dhubri, IGP (STF) Partha Sarathi Mahanta revealed that the Assam Police promptly responded to credible inputs received from a central agency about 15 days ago.
Addressing media at the Assam Police headquarters, IGP Mahanta disclosed that the Special Task Force (STF) personnel were immediately deployed to potential areas of movement of the ISIS leaders in Dhubri.
Mahanta detailed, “Approximately 15 days ago, we received intelligence from a central agency indicating potential movements of ISIS leaders in certain parts of the Dhubri Sector. This credible information prompted the activation of a special task force. We strategically deployed our personnel to monitor areas of potential movement. By March 18th, we had narrowed down our focus, and by the 19th, we received specific information about the likely movement.”
He further explained, “Consequently, I led an STF team, accompanied by Additional SP Kalyan Kumar Pathak, to the general area of Dharmasala in Dhubri. On the morning of the 18th, we encountered two individuals appearing to seek transportation to their destination. Armed with photographs of top-level ISIS leaders, two of the images matched with these individuals.”
Regarding the suspects, Mahanta identified them as Haris Farooqi, the alleged head of ISIS operations in India, and his associate Anurag Singh. He described Farooqi as highly skilled in recruitment and indoctrination.
The IGP emphasized, “Given the seriousness of the situation, we immediately shared this information with the National Investigation Agency (NIA), as the suspects were wanted in their case. The NIA promptly arrived, and since the suspects have a pending case, we handed them over to the NIA for further action.”
The arrested individuals are currently in NIA custody and are undergoing legal proceedings.
