Assam Jaitya Parishad Leader Accuses Assam DGP of BJP Allegiance

Guwahati, 29th February: Assam Jaitya Parishad leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi launched a scathing attack on Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh, accusing him of acting as a BJP agent in the state. Speaking at a press conference in Guwahati on February 29, Gogoi cautioned the DGP against aligning with the saffron party’s agenda and urged him to refrain from exceeding his official duties.

Addressing the issue of a social media post by the Assam DGP, Gogoi criticized the top cop for allegedly warning of consequences before any incident occurred, stating that such actions were unwarranted and undermined the rule of law. He emphasized the need for impartiality and adherence to legal procedures in handling protests and agitations.

Furthermore, Gogoi criticized the state government for declaring a half-holiday on the occasion of the Ram temple consecration ceremony, estimating a loss of approximately Rs 800 crore. He demanded that the Assam DGP take responsibility for the incurred losses from the state BJP.

In response, Assam DGP GP Singh cited a Gauhati High Court order from 2019, asserting the government’s right to recover losses incurred due to blockades and bandhs. He emphasized that such losses, estimated at around INR 1643 Crores for a single day’s bandh, could be recovered from those organizing such events as arrears of land revenue, as per the court order.

The exchange between Gogoi and the Assam DGP underscores the ongoing tensions surrounding political affiliations and law enforcement in the state. Meanwhile, the Tinsukia unit of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti organized a mass sit-in protest against the government’s proposed implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), reflecting the continued activism and dissent within the region.
