Assam: Sarbananda Sonowal to contest from Dibrugarh seat in upcoming Lok Sabha elections

Guwahati, 29th February: Former Assam Chief Minister and current Union Minister, Rajya Sabha MP Sarbananda Sonowal, has announced his intention to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections from the Dibrugarh constituency. While the formal announcement is scheduled for tomorrow, March 1, 2024, Sonowal’s candidacy is expected to be a significant development in Assam’s political landscape.

The decision comes after a crucial meeting held in New Delhi on February 28, involving Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP President JP Nadda. During the meeting, discussions on the final list of candidates for the Lok Sabha Elections were concluded, with preparations for the Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting underway.

Ahead of the CEC meeting scheduled for today at 9 pm, a 3-member panel has been formed for each constituency to finalize the list of candidates. In Delhi, the BJP’s election committee has presented a list of 25-30 potential candidates to the national leadership, focusing on the seven Lok Sabha seats in the national capital.

Sonowal’s decision to contest from Dibrugarh underscores the BJP’s strategic planning for the upcoming elections and reflects the party’s confidence in his leadership and popularity among voters in Assam. His candidacy is expected to add momentum to the BJP’s campaign efforts in the region.
