Assam: Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera Takes Charge as Director General of Assam Rifles
Guwahati, 1st August: Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera has officially taken over as the 22nd Director General of the Assam Rifles, marking a new chapter for the paramilitary force renowned as the “Sentinels of the North-East.” His appointment, effective August 1, underscores a deep well of experience and a distinguished military career.
Lt Gen Lakhera’s extensive background includes a notable tenure as the Inspector General of Assam Rifles in Nagaland, where he gained significant expertise in the region. With a career spanning 34 years, he has held various command and staff positions, demonstrating leadership across some of India’s most challenging terrains.
Commissioned into the Indian Army in 1990, Lakhera led the 4 SIKH LI unit in lower Assam. His academic achievements are equally impressive, with multiple postgraduate degrees from esteemed institutions, including the Royal College of Defence Studies in London.
His career has been marked by pivotal roles in counter-insurgency operations both in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast. Prior to assuming his new position, he served as Additional Director General Military Operations, focusing on information warfare.
General Lakhera’s service has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Ati Vishist Seva Medal and the Sena Medal, alongside multiple commendations from senior military leadership. His appointment is expected to bring continued excellence and strategic insight to the Assam Rifles.
