Assam-Meghalaya Border Pact Interim Stay Ordered by the HC

Guwahati: In conjunction with an interstate border treaty that the chief ministers of Assam and Meghalaya signed earlier this year, the Meghalaya High Court has put an interim hold on physical boundary demarcation or the construction of boundary posts on the ground, according to PTI.

Conrad K. Sangma, the chief minister of Meghalaya, and his counterpart, Himanta Biswa Sarma, reached an agreement in March to demarcate the border in at least six of the 12 areas that are in dispute and frequently cause conflict between the two states.

A case brought by four “traditional chiefs” of Meghalaya was granted an interim stay till the next hearing date of February 6, 2023, by Justice H S Thangkhiew.

“It is however understood that during the intervening period, no physical demarcation or erection of boundary posts on the ground, pursuant to the MoU dated 29.03.2022 shall be carried out, till the next date,” Justice Thangkhiew said.

The “traditional chiefs” said that the MoU between the two northeastern states breached the Constitution’s Sixth Schedule, which deals with special requirements for the administration of tribal territories, in their plea to the high court.
