Assam Police Apprehends Journalist and Others Suspected of Cyber Crimes

Guwahati, 13th August: Amid a rising tide of cybercrimes reported in the state, Assam Police took action on Saturday, apprehending a journalist from a local news portal and three other individuals in Jagiroad, Morigaon district, on suspicion of their involvement in illegal activities.

Acting on a tip-off, Jagiroad Police intercepted a suspicious vehicle during routine Naka checking. Upon searching the vehicle, they uncovered a trove of incriminating documents including bank papers and mobile phones.

Further scrutiny of the mobile phones revealed the presence of objectionable apps, deepening the suspicions of the police regarding the individuals’ potential involvement in cybercrimes.

Among those detained was journalist Javed Khan. Upon interrogation, it was revealed that the suspects were operating from a rental property in Guwahati’s Six Mile area.

Taking the investigation forward, a combined team of police from Morigaon district and Guwahati conducted a raid at the rental property. This operation resulted in the seizure of 281 SIM cards, five mobile phones, a vehicle bearing the registration number AS 01 EE 7686, and additional objectionable documents.

The police are currently in the midst of a thorough investigation following the substantial seizure at the rental property. The detained individuals – Javed Khan, Ijazul Haque Kader, Shahanur Alam, and Asanur Islam – remain under custody at the police station, with Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Samiran Baishya of Morigaon Crime Branch overseeing the ongoing investigation.

ASP Baishya assured that the detained individuals are being questioned extensively, and appropriate legal action will be taken as the investigation progresses.
