Assam Police Arrests Three Student Leaders Ahead of Anti-CAA Agitation

Guwahati, 29th February: Assam Police on February 29 apprehended three student leaders in anticipation of the upcoming anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) agitation in the state, as alleged by Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi.

The arrested leaders have been identified as Raijor Dal general secretary Zahiuddin Laskar, Tinsukia District Chhatra Mukti Sangram Samiti secretary Umananda Maran, and Dhubri district Krishak Mukti secretary Ratul Roy.

The resurgence of protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Assam gained momentum ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. A significant rally was organized at Lakhidhar Bora Kshetra in Guwahati under the direction of the anti-CAA Coordination Committee, Assam on February 17.

Various opposition party members, including those from the Congress, Trinamool Congress, Raijor Dal, Asom Jatiya Parishad, and left parties like CPI(M), participated in the event. President of the anti-CAA Coordination Committee, Dr. Hiren Gohain, highlighted the substantial public turnout against the CAA, attributing it to a growing awareness among the people.

Dr. Gohain accused the BJP of political vendetta through the implementation of the CAA, arguing that it would adversely affect the sentiments of the Assamese people. He further contended that the BJP’s decision symbolized an attack on the Assamese people’s heritage, land, and identity, ultimately threatening Assam’s rich diversity. CPI(M) MLA Manoranjan Talukdar echoed similar sentiments, denouncing the CAA as unconstitutional, undemocratic, and communal, and affirmed the resumption of protests against it.

Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan described the law as perilous and calamitous, emphasizing the need for the statewide movement to be organized akin to an election campaign.
