Assam Police Intensify Crackdown on Illegal Immigration; New Guidelines to Enhance Border Security

Guwahati, 8th September: In a continued effort to combat illegal immigration, Assam Police apprehended and pushed back five Bangladeshi nationals early this morning at 1:00 AM. The detained individuals are Mastabis Rahman, Asma Bibi, Abani Saddar, Lima Saddar, and Sumaya Akhtar.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reaffirmed the state’s commitment to tackling illegal immigration. On September 7, Sarma announced an aggressive crackdown on unauthorized entrants, criticizing the slowed detection process following the National Register of Citizens (NRC) update. He highlighted that in recent months, 20-30 individuals from Bangladesh have been intercepted or repelled, underscoring the need for a more rigorous identification approach.

In response to rising concerns, including potential fraud related to Aadhaar card issuance in Dhubri district, Sarma introduced new guidelines aimed at strengthening the detection and verification of illegal immigrants. Effective October 1, individuals will need to apply for the NRC to obtain an Aadhaar card, although this requirement will not extend to tea garden areas. The directive is designed to enhance the state’s border security and prevent unauthorized immigration.

Sarma’s announcement reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to fortify Assam’s borders and ensure a more robust approach to managing and preventing illegal immigration.
