Assam Police Jawan Gets 20-Year Prison Term for Raping Minor, Landmark POCSO Act Verdict
Guwahati, 18th June: In a significant legal development, Bonjit Das, a 35-year-old Assam Police Jawan hailing from Manikpur, Bongaigaon, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by a Special POCSO Court in Kokrajhar. The court found Das guilty of raping a 16-year-old minor in January 2019, a verdict announced by Special Court Judge Jaydev Koch on Tuesday.
The case, which was registered under IPC Section 363 and POCSO Act Section 4, concluded with the arrest and subsequent prosecution of Das, marking a critical milestone in the fight against crimes targeting minors. Special Public Prosecutor Manjit Kumar Ghose addressed the media following the judgment, emphasizing the severity of the offense and the stringent penalties prescribed under the POCSO Act.
“The verdict by Judge Jaydev Koch highlights the gravity of crimes against minors. Bonjit Das has been sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment and fined Rs. 10,000,” Ghose stated.
The ruling sets a precedent for justice in cases of sexual violence against minors, reaffirming the commitment to protect vulnerable children and prosecute offenders rigorously under the law.
