Assam: Police Officers Arrested for Allegedly Facilitating Illegally Imported Goods

Guwahati, 6th January: In Assam’s Hailakandi district, the Bilaipur police station took action by arresting four police officers on Friday for their alleged involvement in aiding the passage of illegally imported Burmese supari-laden trucks from Myanmar through Mizoram.

The accused police officers were charged with accepting money under the guise of assisting the illicit entry of Burmese supari into the state. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Hailakandi, Samir Dapat Baruah, informed the media about the incident, revealing that three police officers stationed at a checkpoint during the night were involved in the illicit activities.

The officers, identified as Armed Branch Sub-Inspector (ABSI) Munsi Murmu and Armed Branch Lance Naik Ranjeet Gowala, were reported to be threatening truck drivers and extorting money to allow them to enter Assam. Upon discovering this, the officer in charge of the Bilaipur police station promptly notified the Lala police station. Both stations collaborated to assess and address the situation.

During the investigation, the implicated police officials handed over approximately Rs 42,500 to the Bilaipur police station officer in charge. Subsequently, all three officers were taken into custody, and a case was registered against them under sections 164, 384, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Further revelations showed that two of the police officials, ABSI Munshi Murmu and AB Ranjit Gowala, are from the police cadres of the 1st commando battalion of the Assam police. Lance Naik Sanjay Roy is currently on deputation in Hailakandi DFO.

In a separate incident, three more police officers were deployed to the Dhalchera checkpoint in Hailakandi on Friday night. Among them, AB Lance Naik Ashim Sinha was accused of extorting money from truck drivers transporting Burmese areca nuts. Newly recruited officers, AB Chandrajit Sinha and AB Dilip Subba, reported the matter to the Dhalchera police station, leading to the apprehension of AB Lance Naik Ashim Sinha by the officer in charge.
