Police has resorted to Lathi-charge on AASU activists in Tezpur of Assam. The incident took place at a time when thousands of AASU protestors took out a Torch Rally in the City against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Meanwhile, condemning the action of the Police AASU has announce a Sonitpur shutdown on Saturday. Notably, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has launched its 3-day Anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) across the State.
A massive Torch Rally taken out by the AASU from Swahid Nyas (AASU HEADQUARTERS) in Guwahati was blocked by the Police Midway. AASU Leaders including Chief Advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya and President Dipanka Nath got engaged in a heated argument with the Police personnel after being barricaded. “The Government has directed the Police to stop our peaceful democratic Torch Light Rally. This BJP Government is trying to snatch away our democratic right to protest by the means of force,” AASU President Dipanka Nath said. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah will be in Assam shortly, and we warn the Centre that we will intensify our agitation against the draconian CAA. No rest until CAA is repealed by the Government,” added Dipanka Nath. Meanwhile, AASU Chief Advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya slammed the BJP-LED Assam Government over blocking of the ‘democratic and peaceful Torch Rally’. Taking a dig at Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Samujjal Bhattacharya said, “Sonowal being a product of the AASU blocking this rally is shameful.” “This BJP Government is not working for the safeguard of the rights of the indigenous Assamese People. It has been over a year now that the Clause 6 Committee had submitted its report, but the Centre and the State Government have failed to implement it,” added Samujjal Bhattacharya. Similar protests were also seen across the State. In Sivasagar, where PM Modi will take part in a Public Meeting on Saturday, thousands of People took to the streets holding torches in their hands. Notably, all AASU activists will be wearing black badges to Register their protest against CAA on Saturday.
