Assam: Police shoots at murder accused in Kokrajhar

Guwahati, 7th December: In a dramatic turn of events in Assam’s Kokrajhar district, Shambhu Kahar, the prime accused in the murder case of a retired government employee, was seriously injured when police opened fire during his attempt to escape. Kahar had earlier been apprehended from West Bengal.

The incident unfolded during a search operation at Amguri in Kokrajhar when Kahar tried to flee from custody. In an attempt to recover the machete used in the murder, the police took the accused to the jungle where he had hidden it.

Compelled to act, the police discharged their firearms, resulting in injuries to Kahar’s left leg. He was promptly taken to RNB Civil Hospital around 2 am, and the attending doctor confirmed his stable condition.

Prior to this, Kokrajhar police had arrested Kahar, the main accused in the murder of Tapan Chakraborty (72) and the brutal attack on his wife, Madhumita Banerjee (65), both retired officials. The incident occurred at their Bhidanpally residence in Kokrajhar town on November 29.

Speaking at a briefing in Kokrajhar Sadar Police Station, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime Investigation Wing) Prithviraj Rajkhowa revealed that Kahar was apprehended from Behar under Kotwali police station in West Bengal’s Coochbehar district. He was brought to Kokrajhar police station in connection with case no 396/2023 under sections 448/326/307/302/380 IPC.

The senior police officer mentioned that the accused has several pending cases at Katwali police station in West Bengal and in Kokrajhar.
