Assam Police STF Seizes 22,000 Boxes of Foreign Cigarettes in Major Contraband Bust

Guwahati, 1st August: In a significant operation, the Assam Police Special Task Force (STF), led by Additional SP Kalyan Kumar Pathak, seized 22,000 boxes of foreign cigarettes in the Amingaon area of Kamrup district. The bust on Wednesday led to one arrest and the detention of three others.

Pranab Jyoti Goswami, Chief Public Relations Officer of Assam Police, provided details of the operation. Acting on an intelligence tip-off, the STF intercepted a truck carrying illegal foreign cigarettes from Silchar to Raipur, Chhattisgarh. The truck, registered as HR-38Z-8530, was stopped in Amingaon, where officers discovered 11 large cartons of foreign cigarettes hidden beneath furniture consignments, totaling 4,40,000 individual cigarettes. The truck driver, Parashu Baishya, was arrested.

Following the driver’s confession, police raided the MR King Godown in Boragaon. During the raid, they detained the godown manager, Sahil Dewan, along with Ashique Ikbal and Ajit Saloi for further questioning.

“Necessary legal measures are being taken, and the investigation is ongoing. More details are awaited,” Goswami said.

This operation follows a recent major bust in Cachar district, where Assam Police seized 30,000 Yaba tablets worth Rs 9 crore and arrested Abdul Alim. This consecutive crackdown highlights Assam Police’s intensified efforts to combat illegal contraband activities in the state.
