Assam: Rare Slow Loris Spotted in Shimlabagan; Villagers Ensure Safe Handover to Authorities
Guwahati, 20th August: In a remarkable and rare occurrence, villagers in Shimlabagan, a remote area near the Indo-Bhutan border in Shantipur, reported the sighting of an endangered primate, the Slow Loris. This is the first known instance of this elusive species being observed in the region, particularly near Jauhoulao National Park within the newly designated Chiknazha area.
Upon recognizing the significance of their discovery, the local community acted swiftly to protect the Slow Loris. Demonstrating commendable conservation awareness, the villagers notified the authorities and safely handed the primate over to the forest department at Shantipur.
The forest department has now taken custody of the Slow Loris and is expected to conduct further studies to learn more about the species, its behavior, and the broader implications of its presence in the region. This discovery could have significant conservation implications, potentially leading to increased efforts to protect and study the Slow Loris in its natural habitat.
