Assam records 4846 cyber crime cases in 2021: NCRB Data

Guwahati: Assam has been seeing an alarming increase in cybercrime and fraud cases as it has risen to the top among the North East states after having seen a total of 4846 cases in 2021, as per the data released by National Crime Records Bureau on December 13.

According to the NCRB, Assam had 4846 instances registered by the end of 2021, followed by Arunachal Pradesh with 47 cases, Manipur with 67 cases and Meghalaya with 107 cases, Mizoram with 30 cases, and Nagaland with 8.

On the other hand, Sikkim recorded no instances of fraud or cybercrime.

The data further stated that out of 4846 incidents that Assam reported, 579 of them resulted in charge sheets being submitted, and two of those instances resulted in convictions and two in discharges. In addition, 6096 people may have been arrested while at least 88 were found not guilty.

Moreover, 931 persons were charged and two of them were convicted.

Additionally, while people were found not convicted in 149 cases, they were discharged in two cases.

47 cases of cybercrime and fraud were reported in Arunachal Pradesh, of which three had charge sheets filed, five people had been arrested, and two had been charged.

In Manipur, there were 67 cases, two of which resulted in the filing of charge sheets and the arrest of roughly 31 people. In addition to this, Mizoram reported 30 cases, of which 20 had charge sheets filed.

Additionally, Meghalaya saw 107 cases, of which a charge sheet was filed in six, and Nagaland witnessed 8.

According to the NCRB data, Assam recorded 189 arrests made in accordance with the UAPA for the year 2021, whereas Mizoram and Sikkim reported no arrests.

It is worth mentioning that from 2019 to 2021, there was an increase in the number of arrests made in Assam under the UAPA.

The data shows that in Assam for the year 2021, those between the ages of 18 and 30 reported 108 arrests, which is the highest number.

In terms of other Northeastern states, Assam leads with 187 arrests, followed by Meghalaya with 5, Nagaland with 1, Arunachal Pradesh with 6, Tripura with 21, and Manipur with zero. Mizoram and Sikkim have no arrests to report.
