Assam Rifles and Mizoram Customs Seize Areca Nuts in Joint Operation in Champhai district

Northeast Desk, 20th February: In a coordinated effort between Assam Rifles and the Customs Preventive Force of Mizoram, a significant seizure of 114 bags of Areca nuts was made in the general area of Mualkawi, located in Champhai district of Mizoram on February 17.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the joint operation led by Assam Rifles and assisted by the Customs Preventive Force (Mizoram) resulted in the successful seizure of the bags of Areca nuts. The estimated value of the confiscated consignment is Rs 63.84 lakh.

This operation follows a previous joint effort between Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police on February 12, where 300 bags of dry Areca nuts and 150 bags of green Areca were seized in the general area of Melbuk, also under Champhai district. The total weight of this consignment was approximately 36,000 kg, valued at Rs 2.52 crore in the international market.

During the recent operation, the combined team of Assam Rifles and state police detained three individuals in connection to the incident. The detainees are identified as Lalnuntluanga (39) from Hunver Veng, Aizawl, Lalruatkima (40) from Kolasib, and Malsawmtlaunga (30) from Aizawl.

The investigation into the matter is ongoing, with legal proceedings initiated against the detainees as per the law. The successful collaboration between Assam Rifles and Mizoram Customs highlights their commitment to combatting illegal activities and maintaining security in the region.
