Assam: Schools, colleges in flood-hit Guwahati to remain close tomorrow
Guwahati, 5th August:– Following severe flash floods caused by heavy rainfall on Monday, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has mandated the closure of all educational institutions, both government and private, on Tuesday, August 6.
The decision, aimed at ensuring public safety, was issued under Section 30.2 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005. The order from the district commissioner’s office read, “In view of the situation arising out of the flash flood caused by heavy rains in Guwahati city that occurred on 05/08/2024, all the Educational Institutes (both Govt. and Private) are hereby declared closed on 06/08/2024 within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation area.”
The heavy downpour has significantly disrupted daily life in Guwahati, with several streets and low-lying areas inundated. The resulting artificial flooding has made commuting difficult and has severely affected vehicular movement across key areas, leading to substantial traffic jams.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecasted a generally cloudy sky with intermittent rain and thunderstorms for Guwahati, indicating that the adverse weather conditions may persist.
