Assam State Cabinet Deliberates Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill

Guwahati, 11th February: The Assam state cabinet recently deliberated on the potential introduction of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, aiming to ensure equal treatment for all sections of society, regardless of their religious affiliation. However, Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah disclosed that no final decision was reached during the cabinet meeting.

Earlier indications from Mallabaruah hinted at the significance of the UCC as a topic of discussion, suggesting the possibility of certain relaxations for tribal communities in its implementation. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had previously mentioned the government’s support for UCC implementation while assuring that tribal populations would be excluded from its purview.

Sarma disclosed that the Assam government is closely observing the UCC draft bill formulated by Uttarakhand, evaluating its relevance for northeastern states. He emphasized the state’s interest in adopting the UCC and highlighted Uttarakhand’s recent passage of the bill, making it the first state to do so on February 7.

Despite the discussions, the recent cabinet meeting did not result in a conclusive decision on the UCC. Mallabaruah, addressing the media post-meeting, highlighted ongoing discussions on issues like polygamy concerning the UCC. He suggested that a decision on the matter might emerge by the end of the budget session, scheduled until February 28.

Mallabaruah also hinted at significant decisions for the nation’s advancement once Narendra Modi assumes office for a consecutive third term as Prime Minister. The ongoing budget session of the Assam Legislative Assembly, commenced on February 5, includes the presentation of 11 bills.

Although the UCC was not among the decisions announced after the cabinet meeting, Mallabaruah expressed optimism about progress on this front. Additionally, the cabinet approved the Assam Healing (Prevention of Evil) Practices Bill 2024, aimed at criminalizing the use of traditional magical methods for treating congenital diseases.
