Assam: Violent Clash Erupts Over Illegal Money Lending Operations in Gauripur

Guwahati, 24th February: A violent altercation shook the tranquility of Ashtamirchar, falling under the jurisdiction of the Gauripur police station, as tensions boiled over concerning the illicit activities of illegal money lenders. The incident left several individuals injured, igniting fury among locals who have long endured the oppressive grip of unlawful financial practices.

At the center of the turmoil stands Omar Ali, a controversial figure accused of masterminding a clandestine money lending empire that operates beyond the confines of the law. Reports indicate that Ali has persistently harassed community members in pursuit of his exploitative transactions.

The genesis of the conflict traces back to a loan of Rs 1.5 lakh provided to Ali by Zahar Uddin. Despite Uddin’s efforts to make partial repayments, he found himself incapable of settling the entire debt, plunging him into financial distress. Matters escalated when Ali and his cohorts attempted to seize Uddin’s farmland, exacerbating existing tensions.

Tensions reached a crescendo when Uddin and his brothers intervened to protect their property. However, instead of reaching a resolution, the confrontation descended into violence, with Uddin and several others falling victim to a brutal assault by Ali’s associates. Uddin sustained grave injuries, necessitating immediate medical attention at a nearby hospital.

Adding to the turmoil, Uddin’s family alleges that Ali has exploited purported connections within law enforcement circles to evade accountability. They assert that Ali has unabashedly boasted of bribing police personnel to shield himself from repercussions. Despite their concerted efforts to seek assistance from the authorities, Uddin’s relatives have encountered numerous hurdles in their quest for justice.
