Authorities Rescue Newborn Sold Due to Poverty in Tripura

Guwahati, 26th May: In a distressing tale of poverty and desperation, Mormati Tripura, a 37-year-old tribal woman from Tripura’s Dhalai district, resorted to selling her newborn daughter following the death of her husband five months ago. Struggling to make ends meet and support her three other children, Mormati sold her infant daughter to a couple in Hezamara for Rs 5,000.

The plight of Mormati and her newborn came to light when Opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhary shared a video on social media, drawing attention to the dire situation. Concerned authorities swiftly intervened to rectify the situation and reunite the infant with her mother.

Officials explained that Mormati’s extreme financial hardship, compounded by the responsibility of caring for her three other children, likely drove her to make this heart-wrenching decision.

Following the alert, authorities acted promptly to retrieve the infant and reunite her with Mormati the next day. They assured ongoing support for the family, extending necessary aid to ensure the well-being of both the mother and the child.

The incident sheds light on the profound challenges faced by families grappling with poverty in the region and underscores the need for comprehensive support systems to uplift vulnerable communities.
