Bangladeshi Cricketer Shakib Al Hasan Takes Plunge into Politics
International Desk, 20th November: Bangladeshi cricket sensation Shakib Al Hasan formally ventures into politics, seeking a nomination from the ruling Bangladesh Awami League (BAL) for the upcoming general election on January 7. BAL joint secretary general Bahauddin Nasim highlights Shakib’s immense popularity among the youth as he eyes candidacy in three constituencies.
Shakib’s candidacy awaits confirmation from a ruling party parliamentary board, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The cricket all-rounder, nursing a finger injury, aims to contest a seat in either his southwestern home district of Magura or the capital, Dhaka.
Political transitions are not uncommon for South Asian cricketers, but Shakib’s move during an active playing career stands out. Former captain Mashrafe Mortaza, who transitioned to politics in 2018, serves as a precedent, having been elected as a lawmaker from the ruling party.
While Hasina eyes a fourth term amid opposition boycott threats, concerns over democratic backsliding persist. Shakib, currently sidelined due to injury, adds a new chapter to his illustrious career, blending cricket stardom with political aspirations.
