BJP Expels Rajasthan MLA Shobharani Kushwah for Voting for Congress in RS Polls

Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ousted Shobharani Kushwah, a Rajasthan MLA, on Wednesday for cross-voting in the Rajya Sabha polls.

In a letter to Kushwah, BJP central disciplinary committee secretary Om Pathak stated that separate discipline action would be initiated against her.

“You are dismissed from the party with immediate effect and also removed of other tasks assigned by the party,” the letter stated.

Kushwah voted for Congress candidate Pramod Tiwari in the Rajya Sabha elections on June 10. The BJP then served her with a show-cause notice and suspended her on the same day.

The MLA had until June 19 to respond to the notification, but she first made a statement to the media criticising the party.

She claimed that her party had encouraged her to vote for an independent candidate who was openly advocating cross-voting in the Rajya Sabha elections.

Shobharani Kushwah is the wife of B L Kushwah, a former BSP MLA who was disqualified as a legislator in December 2016 after being found guilty in a murder case.

Shobharani won the bypoll on a BJP ticket in 2017 after being disqualified. Then, she won the seat in the assembly elections for the second time in 2018.
