BJP MLA Biswabandhu Sen Elected as Tripura Assembly Speaker
Guwahati: Former deputy speaker and BJP-IPFT candidate Biswabandhu Sen won the election for speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly on March 24.
Sen received 32 votes and Gopal Chandra Roy, the leader of the Congress received 14 votes in the poll which took place on March 24 in the first day of the state Assembly session following the inauguration of the new administration earlier in the month.
The 69-year-old Sen left the Congress and joined BJP in 2017.
Sen was congratulated on being chosen as speaker of the Assembly by Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also said, “I feel, the grandeur of the House would reach new heights under his skillful leadership.”
Sen was the speaker candidate put out by the saffron whilst Gopal Chandra Roy was the combined candidate of the Congress and the Marxist Party.
“My party leaders have chosen my name and I have no doubt about my victory as we are the ruling party in the Assembly,” Sen said.
In the 60-member Tripura Legislature, the BJP-IPFT coalition has 33 seats while the opposition Congress and CPI(M) have 14 seats combined.
Tipra Motha on the other hand has 13 MLAs.
