Cannabis Worth 3 Cr Seized Ahead Of Counting Day In Tripura
Guwahati: A day before the counting of Tripura’s recent assembly elections, a massive shipment of cannabis worth almost Rs 3 crore was caught in the state.
Initial reports state that the massive consignment was intercepted during a routine screening operation in the Ganganagar area, which is currently part of Tripura’s Dhalai district.
This occurs as the three northeastern states of Tripura, Nagaland, and Meghalaya are preparing for tomorrow’s assembly election counting. Tripura was the first of the three states to head to polls on February 16, while elections in Nagaland and Meghalaya were held on February 27.
A checkpoint was set up in Ganganagar by Tripura Police and Tripura State Rifles Jawans in response to specific information about a potential smuggling attempt.
According to information received, officials were checking vehicles as they passed through the checkpoint on the national highway at Gandacherra in Dhalai, when two vehicles were intercepted from which police found the cannabis consignment. Police also detained four people in connection with the matter.
According to Tripura Police officials, the entire seizure which weighed almost 2,000 kilogrammes was found in a car and a container truck at the checkpoint.
Officials also stated that the four young people arrested in the case were brought in for questioning and that more legal action will be taken against them in accordance with the law.
They also went on to estimate the entire seizure to be worth around Rs 3 crores in the international drug markets.
