Centre Issues Caution Against “Akira” Ransomware; Urges Vigilance to Safeguard Information
National Desk, 24th July: The Indian government’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a warning about the internet ransomware named “Akira,” known for stealing vital information and encrypting data, potentially leading to extortion.
The advisory from CERT-In, which oversees cybersecurity and protects against cyber threats, highlights that “Akira” specifically targets Windows and Linux-based systems.
Upon infiltrating a system, the ransomware stealthily steals sensitive information and encrypts the data, making it inaccessible to the user. Subsequently, it employs a double extortion tactic, compelling the victim to pay a ransom to regain access to their encrypted data.
The advisory states, “In case the victim does not pay, they release their victim’s data on their dark web blog,” raising concerns over potential data breaches and privacy violations.
Given the emergence of this ransomware, CERT-In has emphasized the importance of adhering to basic online hygiene and implementing protective measures to shield against such attacks.
To safeguard critical data, the advisory recommends maintaining offline backups and regularly updating them, ensuring minimal data loss in the event of an attack. Additionally, users are encouraged to follow a strong password policy, fortifying their digital security.
As ransomware attacks continue to pose a threat to internet users, staying vigilant and adopting cybersecurity best practices becomes paramount to protect personal and sensitive information from falling into the hands of cybercriminals.
