Chennai: Cyclone Mandous Makes Landfall, Trees Uprooted And Roads Flooded

Guwahati: Cyclonic storm Mandous which the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported has passed the Mamallapuram coast and is reducing in power after completing its landfall process late on Friday night, caused heavy rainfall and strong winds in Chennai and numerous other regions of Tamil Nadu.

In some districts of Chennai, trees were uprooted by strong winds and flooding, which also affected the neighbouring Chengalpattu district. Low-lying areas have experienced severe waterlogging as a result of the cyclone’s precipitation. In Chennai’s Arumbakkam, the MMDA Colony’s roads were found to be flooded. A video from Egmore showed a sizable tree uprooted, inflicting significant damage to a neighbouring gas tank.

Mandous is all set to weaken to a deep depression and later a depression on Saturday.

S Balachandran, DDGM, RMC Chennai, said “Cyclone Mandous crossed the coast and is in deep depression and its strength is weakening. It is moving towards the Northwest direction so areas in northwest districts will witness strong winds of 55-65 kmph which will further decrease by evening to 30-40 kmph.”

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) asked citizens not to leave their homes till Cyclone Mandous begins to weaken earlier today. According to reports, about 65 trees fell within a three-hour period, and motor pumps are now being employed to clear low-lying regions of water stagnation.

Notably, members of the National Disaster Response Force are prepared. In the event of any flood-related crises, the Tamil Nadu government has published a list of helplines.

Vehicle traffic on the East Coast Road (ECR) began at 6 am, according to a tweet from the Greater Chennai Traffic Police on Saturday. Due to the cyclone, the stretch had been closed since last night at 10 p.m.

The chief minister of Tamil Nadu MK Stalin claimed on Friday that all precautions had been taken. In addition to routinely monitoring the situation, the administration has taken all necessary precautions, according to Stalin.

Despite the severity of the cyclone, Stalin arrived and inspected the state emergency operations centre in Chepauk. He said that district-level surveillance of the cyclone had also been implemented.

“Whatever the situation may be Government will ensure the protection of the people. District wise the monitoring of the cyclone has also been deployed,” said Stalin.

Stalin urged the populace to cooperate with the state and heed its directives. In the meantime, the Dindigul Collector has declared Saturday a holiday for Sirumalai and Kodaikanal’s schools and institutions.

Puducherry witnessed high winds and heavy rain. In Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh red alerts were issued on Friday.

The cyclone is being monitored by the Doppler Weather Radar Karaikal and Chennai.
