Citizen Action Party Accuses SKM of Misusing Disaster Funds, Urges Governor’s Intervention
Northeast Desk, 18th June: Ganesh Rai, Chief Coordinator of the Citizen Action Party, has leveled serious allegations against the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), accusing them of misappropriating central government funds designated for mitigating natural disasters in the state. Rai expressed deep dissatisfaction with the SKM’s governance since assuming power after the recent elections, citing failures in disaster management and alleged intimidation of citizens and government employees.
A delegation from the Citizen Action Party visited Governor Laxman Acharya at Raj Bhawan in Gangtok on June 18, submitting a memorandum outlining their concerns. Rai emphasized the SKM government’s inadequate handling of recent monsoon-related incidents, attributing landslides solely to natural causes and criticizing their implementation of the Sikkim Disaster Management Act of 2005.
“The SKM government has received substantial funds, approximately 100 crores rupees, for disaster mitigation, yet they have failed to effectively utilize these resources,” Rai asserted, highlighting the economic and infrastructural repercussions affecting businesses and citizens of Sikkim.
Demanding transparency and accountability from the SKM administration, Rai urged Governor Acharya to intervene and ensure proper utilization of disaster management funds. He underscored the importance of prioritizing citizen welfare over political agendas and called upon the people of Sikkim to unite against government intimidation tactics.
In response, Governor Acharya assured Rai and the Citizen Action Party of addressing their grievances with the SKM government. “I will convey your concerns to the state administration and take necessary steps to enhance disaster management and governance in Sikkim,” he pledged.
The accusations by the Citizen Action Party highlight growing concerns over governance issues and disaster preparedness under the SKM regime, prompting calls for immediate corrective measures and greater accountability in utilizing allocated funds.
