Congress leader Bismita Gogoi to quit party, likely to join BJP
Guwahati: In what may be another body blow to the Congress, Leader Bismita Gogoi will quit the party and is likely to join Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Dibrugarh district of Assam on April 28.
Gogoi will join the party in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Confirming the news, reports claimed that she has had a good relationship with the Chief Minister since her days in the Congress.
Meanwhile, a photo of Bismita Gogoi with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has gone viral on social media.
Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi was present during the chief minister’s meeting with Bismita Gogoi.
In 2011, Gogoi was elected to the Khumtai constituency as a member of the Legislative Assembly. Following a cabinet change, she was appointed Minister of Cultural Affairs, Handloom, Textile, Sericulture, and Backward Classes Welfare in Tarun Gogoi’s government for the third term.
She was named General Secretary of the All-India Mahila Congress in 2018.
