Congress Ramps Up Campaign in Northeastern Assam with Key Leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyanka Gandhi

Guwahati, 27th April: The Congress party is gearing up to bolster its presence in northeastern Assam with strategic campaign drives led by party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Priyanka Gandhi.

On April 27, Mallikarjun Kharge is scheduled to kick off the party’s campaign with a press conference in Guwahati, followed by a public meeting in Barpeta. The focus will be on rallying support for Congress nominee Mira Borthakur Goswami, who faces BJP’s Bijuli Kalita Medhi in the Barpeta constituency.

Barpeta’s electoral dynamics have been heightened by controversies, notably the Congress’ nomination of state Seva Dal chief Deep Gayan, which sparked tensions within the United Opposition Forum. Despite the discord, the Congress stands firm in its candidate selection, setting the stage for a triangular contest against Asom Gana Parishad’s Phani Bhushan Chowdhury and CPI-M’s Manoranjan Talukdar.

Meanwhile, in Dhubri, another crucial constituency, Congress has fielded Rakibul Hussain to contest against former ally Badruddin Ajmal of AIUDF. Traditionally a Congress stronghold, Dhubri presents a vital battleground for the party’s electoral strategy.

The upcoming elections carry significant weight for the Congress, which seeks to improve upon its performance in the 2019 national polls. Despite securing victories in Kaliabor, Nowgong, and Barpeta, the party aims to capitalize on opportunities in key constituencies, including Dhubri and Barpeta.

Recently, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi lent their support to party candidates in Jorhat and Dibrugarh constituencies. In Jorhat, Congress leader Gaurab Gogoi competes against BJP’s Topon Gogoi, while in Dibrugarh, the party has aligned with ally Assam Jatiya Parishad, fielding Lurinjyoti Gogoi against BJP’s Sarbananda Sonowal and AAP’s Manoj Dhanowar.

With dynamic leadership and strategic campaigning, the Congress aims to strengthen its foothold in northeastern Assam, mobilizing voters and advancing its electoral prospects in the region.
