Cyclone Biparjoy: PM Modi Holds Meeting to Review Situation

National Desk, 12 June: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting to review the situation related to Cyclone Biparjoy. Prime Minister Modi holds the review meeting at 1 pm on Monday. India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued an Orange Alert for the cyclone off Saurashtra and Kutch coasts in Gujarat.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Sunday visited the State Emergency Operation Centre to review the preparedness against a possible cyclonic storm in coastal districts of the state. This comes in the wake of the ongoing ‘very severe’ cyclonic storm Biparjoy, which is set to enter the land route along the coasts of Kutch and Saurashtra in Gujarat on Thursday.

Gujarat chief minister also held video conferencing with all the officials of the potentially affected area. The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Rajkumar, DGP Vikas Sahay, Relief Commissioner Alok Pandey, Heads of Revenue Department, Power Department and Horticulture Department.

At the end of preliminary discussions with the heads of all departments, collectors and concerned officials from the potentially affected districts also joined through video conferencing.

The impact of Cyclone Biparjoy has already begun in India. Several districts of Saurashtra have seen heavy rains due to the cyclone. Meanwhile, according to the Indian Meteorological department (IMD), cyclone Biparjoy may cross Mandavi. The cyclone is also likely to hit the Kutch coast and is likely to pass through Mandavi and Karachi on June 15. The impact has already been seen in the coastal areas of Kutch.

According to data released by the Meteorological Centre on June 12, cyclone Biparjoy is likely to hit Saurashtra and Kutch coasts from east central and adjoining northeast Arabian Sea. A warning has been issued in this regard. The cyclone has been moving northwards at a speed of 0.5 kmph in the last six hours. Special warning has been announced for Saurashtra and Kutch.

It is to be noted that the BJP has implemented a special programme to mark nine years of the Modi government. But in view of the possibility of a disaster the BJP has postponed its programme in the affected areas till June 15.

According to the Meteorological Centre, Cyclone Biparjoy is likely to affect Mandavi, Naliya, Dwarka, Jamnagar and Purbandar in Gujarat. The government side is in discussions with the deputy commissioners of each district. The impact of Cyclone Biparjoy is visible in Amreli in Saurashtra. Section 144 has been imposed in the coastal areas of Kutch. The administration has taken precautionary measures. Section 144 will be applicable from June 12 to June 16.

Windstorm influence was seen in Porbandar and Dwarka on Sunday. 10 districts of Gujarat have been warned of cyclones. NDRF personnel have also been deployed along with the police. In the wake of Cyclone Biparjoy, 19 villages of Abdasa on The Mandavi beach in Kuch district have been asked to be extra vigilant.
