Deadly Hotel Fire Claims 24 Lives Amidst Bangladesh Unrest
International Desk, 7th August: A devastating fire at the Zabeer Hotel in Joshor district on August 5 claimed the lives of at least 24 individuals, including an Indonesian national. The fire was part of a violent outbreak following the resignation and departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The victims were mainly guests at the hotel, owned by Shahin Chakkladar, the general secretary of the district Awami League. An unidentified group set the hotel’s ground floor ablaze, causing the fire to spread rapidly and trap the occupants inside.
Emergency services reported that the charred remains of the 24 victims were recovered at Joshor General Hospital. Authorities fear more bodies may still be found within the wreckage of the hotel.
This tragic event is one of many violent incidents that have erupted across Bangladesh since Prime Minister Hasina resigned and left the country. The political vacuum has led to widespread chaos, with mobs attacking properties of Awami League leaders and activists nationwide, including vandalizing the party’s central office on Dhaka’s Bangabandhu Avenue.
In an attempt to quell the violence and restore order, the military has intervened. However, the situation remains unstable, with continuing incidents of unrest highlighting the severe political tensions in Bangladesh.
